Commissions?

Wed Feb 11, 2009, 1:03 AM
I wish I could post pictures in my journal! Either I'm not doing it right or I cant because I don't have a subscription :hmm:

I am deciding whither or not to do commissions, and if I do whither it should be sketch or oil.
I main reason I am thinking about this is because I am sort of in a bit of a lull art-wise. After painting so many of my ideas for the show I had, I needed a break and now that I'm back I don't know what to paint and have very little enthusiasm... =(
I need something to get me going again!

So tell me what you think!

  • Listening to: Jay Chou's newest album
  • Reading: Peony In Love
  • Playing: Warcraft: Frozen Throne
  • Eating: xiao yuanzi

you should always keep yourself available for commisions. The price would be based on a complete painting or a sketch the latter being cheaper. what i do when not sure what to draw is have a blank piece of paper in front of me and just wait...something usually comes up.

if you look at your drawing in a mirror you will notice mistakes right away........

your paintings are great, as well as your drawings. I think the paintings are perhaps more sellable but you never know, perhaps people are more into black and white drawings.

I think it would be best (and more encouraging) if you made a journal listing your prices and an example of the type of work.

I haven't sold anything on DA myself, my sister on the other hands sells well, but she uses photoshop and her themes involve ponies and dragons ;)

it seems that under 20 dollar frivolous commissions sell best on this site, like anime and ponies :) but its worth a shot. post your prices and see if any fish bite.

I would have thought the painting were more sellable as well but so far I've only had people asking about the prices of my drawings (and one small painting), I think people see oil paintings and think *expensive* and most of DA is younger and even if they wanted too they couldn't afford it, hence the 20 dollar ones selling better...

Thanks for the advice I might just do that :)

If you want to sell prints or originals you should cast a larger net. Don't rely on just DA. Develop a price list and visit specialty shops, galleries, even bong shops, and pitch your work. When they finish selling, they will call and place another order! Gotta do some serious footwork and networking though... and the economy is bad... but it's worth a shot, and if you leave a card some may call you in the future when business is better. If all fails you will have at least gotten your name out there.

Usually commissions in my world are very client specific.

All good suggestions :), my main problem is that I'm actually in China at the moment, I'll be back in the U.S. in the summer.

I do live in an area with a lot of galleries so that will help in the future. Thanks!

Wow. What is the art scene like over there?
:iconmimi-chan-00:
Actually there is a lot happening here, but not even close to what I'd be able to sell my work for in the U.S. lots of contemporary, some comic type paintings, probably the largest number are realism painters that actually started when they were very young. One of the best traditional art schools is only about 2 hours away, in Hangzhou.

Wow that's exciting. They start their children young in trades there. I wonder if they enjoy painting since they were almost forced into it? When will you be returning to the states?
:iconmimi-chan-00:
you know I all that I have meet seem to truly enjoy it, and of course they are plenty of worse jobs one could be forced into here...
